In a season of highs for the club, the Saxons ramped up the drama during the play offs weekend turning the form book on its head and bringing tears to the bookies eyes as they defied all odds to top the table and secure BWPL waterpolo for next season. Playing Otter, Rotherham and The British Army, the pulsating weekend began versus Otter and a nail biting final quarter ended with an 11-11 draw and a penalty shoot-out. Big moments call for big hearts and nerves of steel, it also helps if you have the Giant Serb in goal. Janko with 3 saves and 3 Watford goals from the first 3 rounds and it was all over and they were off to a winning start.
‘Super Saturday’ then threw up another tantalising fixture against Rotherham Metro who had topped Championship 1 scoring over a century of goals in seven games and having beaten the Saxons 16-5 only a fortnight earlier but this Saxons team comprising of five U18s had different ideas. They even included a debutant, up and coming player Big Sam Carling. The heady mix of youth and experience found themselves under the pump early in quarter as they trailed 8-3 before a flurry of five goals in four minutes had Watford fans and neutrals alike jumping out of their seats. The middle of quarter three and consistent team play saw Watford take a lead and despite a spirited display from Rotherham a high scoring game and the day ended with a second win for the Saxons Army.
Day two saw for this season’s third time the almighty clash with the British Army. The match has already been reported by on Steve Chambers It also saw three Dorringtons take to the water with the youngsters Owen and Gethin joined by the elderly Alun. Win three out of three was secured with an epic final surge comeback. Trailing 10-6 and they left it all out on the park, scoring 6 unanswered goals to give Big Sam the kind of send off he deserved and putting the Saxons into BWPL.
If your hearts can stand anymore excitement six of Sundays team (all U18s) will be back in action in the NAGs finals weekend in Coventry May 3rd & 4th. Come and roar them on, both our boys U17 & U19s will be flying the Watford flag.
