Watford Junior Keeyan Shah showcases Water Polo in Northern India...

Stephen Chambers19 Aug 2024 - 12:29

This summer, Keeyan spent two weeks volunteering in northern India with a group of other volunteers within the charity of Veerayatan.

Veerayatan is a charity that aims to improve the lives of those in the local
community.

During my time their, we took part in a range of activities such as teaching in schools,
helping in the hospitals serving food and performing dental procedures, eye
testing for kids in the school, and visiting sites of historical importance in the
area such as Nalanda university - one of the oldest universities in the world.

This was a unique opportunity as it allowed me to experience a different culture
and lifestyle whilst making an impact to one of the most deprived areas in India.
One of the main activities involved teaching in the schools. My aim was to
broaden the horizons of these children and, therefore taught the children
concepts and ideas that were diverse and new. Some of these included modes of
transport, lifestyle of the western culture, a variety of sports and many more.
As someone who plays water polo competitively, I wanted to give these kids an
insight about the sport of water polo.

While teaching the children water polo, I focused on the basics of the sport and
how it is played. This comprised of players on a team, unique rules, and a brief
history of the sport. Although access to places to swim were limited, they were
all fascinated by what I taught them. To make the lessons more interactive, I
included ball games that incorporated the basic techniques such as passing and
catching with one hand, showed them the water polo caps, which are used to
protect the ears and identify teams and used photos of the sport in action.

This experience was rewarding because every moment and interaction with the
students brought joy for both myself and the pupils I worked with. It was
heart warming to see their enthusiasm and interest towards water polo and this
has allowed me to appreciate what I have and the people around me.

I am glad that I was able to go on this trip and make an impact in the region of
Bihar.

I am thankful to all those who have made this trip happen and I am proud
to have shared my joy for the sport of water polo.
